I’ve always had an interest in language and am loving discovering the specialized vocabulary of knitting!  I’m not too sure how many of of these terms are specific to online knitting discussions and how many have a longer history, but I thought I’d start listing some popular or favorite terms here.  These are absolutely NOT definitions, I don’t have enough experience for that!   Just my own take on the words (please correct me if you have better knowledge, OK?).

I’ll be adding to this list as whim inspires and time allows; here’s what I have so far:

Knitting Lingo, Page 1

  • tink
  • frog
  • steek
  • WIP
  • UFO
  • FO
  • DPN
  • Circular Needle

Knitting Lingo, Page 2

  • skein
  • hank
  • ball
  • cake
  • WPI

I think it has to do with when a project doesn’t work out, doesn’t lay right, etc
so it’s ‘warty’! But I was told it was an acronym. I have searched for an answer, but haven’t come up with one. I hope you can help!

Hah! I have some yarn that might go in that category … not sure why I bought it but it may never even become an object I can abandon!!
